Note de Grammaire #11 – adjective agreement

NOTE DE GRAMMAIRE –   Adjective agreement

Adjectives must agree in gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural) with the nouns they describe. 1/ Normally, to make an adjective feminine, we start with the masculine form and add an _________.BUT, if the adjective already ends in “e”, we do not need to add another “e” to make it feminine.

2/ If a masculine adjective ends in –eux, we change the ending to –euse to make it feminine.

Ex: parasseux à parasseuse If a masculine adjective ends in –if, we change the ending to –ive to make it feminine.Ex: sportif à sportive

3/ Here are some other irregular adjectives (where we have to do something other than just add an “e”.)

long à longuegros à grosseblanc à blanchebon à bonne (good)gentil à gentillemignon à mignonne (cute) 4/ IMPORTANT!!!! – Adjectives in French come AFTER the noun in the sentence unless they describe Beauty, Age, Goodness or Size. Ex: Marie est une bonne élève.Ex: Marc est un élève sérieux.

5/ Normally, to make an adjective plural, we add an _______ to the end of the word UNLESS it already ends in “s”, then we don’t need to add another “s”.

Ex: Je suis gros.           Ils sont gros.  Exercice:Complete the sentences with the correct form of the adjective: 1/ Marc est ___________ .(tall) 2/ Marie est ____________. (short) 3/ Paul et Marc sont ____________. (smart) 4/ Marie et Alice sont _____________. (funny) 5/ Jean et moi, nous sommes _____________. (tiresome/irritating)
