Note de Grammaire #21 – question words

Question words!

You’ve already learned to ask yes/no questions using intonation (making your voice go up at the end of the sentence) OR using “est-ce que           Ex: Tu aimes le baseball??                 Est-ce que tu aimes le base-ball? To ask for information, use a question word followed by est-ce que and then the Subject and the Verb. What are some examples of question words in English??  Here are the question words in French: When?  =           Quand? Why? =           Pourquoi? What? =           Que [when used at the beginning of a sentence, not by itself]Where? =           Où?How? =           Comment? With whom? = Avec qui? Here’s how we use them in a sentence: Quand est-ce que tu fais du théâtre ?Pourquoi est-ce qu’il n’aime pas faire du vélo ?Qu’est-ce que nous faisons demain ? Exception !!!You don’t use est-ce que with question words when they are followed by a form of the verb ETRE ! Exs : Où est ton frère ?                  Comment est ton amie ? The question word Qui (Who) is followed directly by a verb (Do NOT use « est-ce que » or a subject.  Qui becomes the subject of the sentence.) Exs : Qui joue de la guitare ?               Qui aime le chocolat ?
